Drowning is the leading cause of death in young children. The shocking truth is that 70% of these drownings don’t happen while they are swimming. On World Drowning Prevention Day, we launched The Clothes They Wore. Instead of swimsuit we displayed the real everyday clothes children drowned in accompanied by the devastating true stories told by parents. This message was devastatingly clear: most child drownings happen when you least expect it. In the end, Congress committed to a national child drowning prevention initiative. The Clothes They Wore transformed this overlooked tragedy into national action proving that even the smallest items of clothing can carry the heaviest truth to create change.
